Retirement: THE APPLES AND HONEY DEBATE

(Recently overheard at midnight in a local Publix…)

Harvey the Honeycrisp Apple was bragging again – Yeah, I’m the star on Rosh Hashana. Never mind Wendy Wildflower Honey and her grumbling. It’s called Apples and Honey - Apples come first!

And anyway, did you notice the word ‘HONEY’ is in my name? Honestly, with my crisp bite and sweet-tart flavor, I could deliver a perfectly sweet and fruitful year all by myself.”

A chorus of cheers went up in the produce section. Fuji, Gala, and Pink Lady were swooning while Ryan Red Delicious clapped politely.

Then, came a voice from Aisle 3. Wendy Wildflower waddled in with her two buddies, Clover and Orange Blossom.

Wendy Wildflower HoneyOk, Harvey, I think it’s time we settled this. You may be sweet, but you’re not complete without me. I’m the HONEY!

This time the loud cheers and dancing came from Clover and Orange Blossom. (The cantaloupe and watermelon were uncomfortable because they don’t like arguing.)

Ryan came forward. Ok, that’s enough. Every year at Rosh Hashana you have the same argument. This year, we are going to have an official debate. Each of you gets two reasons why you deserve to be part of a sweet and fruitful year ahead.

(This was amazing. Ryan Red Delicious was taking control and it made a lot of sense. The Look to the Future blessing always includes BOTH Apples and Honey.)

Harvey went first. “In case you don’t know, apples have the mineral BORON. Boron supports bone growth and helps reduce inflammation. That means I can offer health, vitality and even longevity because apple trees often live to be 100! He paused and smiled. And remember, ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away.’ How’s that for a sweet and fruitful future ahead!

He sashayed back to his place, and the apple crowd went wild.

Then Wendy stepped up. She took a deep breath and smiled. I’m naturally sweet and rich in antioxidants that can protect cells from damage. I also represent healing since some research has shown I can help curb severe coughing

I’m often used for that extra hug.  Like when you say, ‘Have a great day, Honey!’ Oh - and don’t forget, Israel is known as “The Land of Milk and HONEY!

She looked straight at the apple crowd.  I don’t spoil easily, and if I look cloudy, I just need a little warming. Since I stay good for a very, very long time, I bring a lot of optimism to that year ahead!”

A couple of the apples nudged each other and looked impressed.

Red came forward and thanked both participants. “Well, there you are. Neither of you is the star. It’s a partnership, and there’s a lesson for all who are toasting to a sweet and fruitful new year ahead:

DON’T JUST WISH OR HOPE.

To reach your goals you must

PLAN AHEAD and strive to live longer
