JCRC Avi Poster Social Justice Seder Marks 60th Anniversary of Nostra Aetate

The Nashville community came together in March for the JCRC’s annual Avi Poster Social Justice Seder marking the 60th anniversary of Nostra Aetate. The gathering blended the Passover story of liberation with reflections on today’s struggles for justice, bringing people of many faiths into one shared space of learning, connection, and hope.

A meaningful moment of the evening came from Bishop J. Mark Spalding, whose thoughtful remarks highlighted how far interfaith relationships have come since Nostra Aetate was issued in 1965. He spoke about the importance of rejecting antisemitism and all forms of hatred, and the responsibility faith communities share in building a more compassionate world. His words resonated deeply with all in attendance and set a tone of genuine partnership.

The Seder drew a broad cross‑section of the community, including leaders from the Catholic community, members of Metro Council, state representatives, and partners from local civic and interfaith organizations. Throughout the Seder, traditional rituals were paired with reflections on modern issues such as inequality, discrimination, and the collective responsibility to pursue justice. The evening was both grounding and inspiring: a reminder that the ancient call to liberation still speaks powerfully to the challenges of our own time.

Special thanks to Rabbi Joshua Kullock, Cantor Tracy Fishbein, and Cantor Josh Goldberg whose thoughtful leadership helped shape the Seder that brought the community together with depth, intention, and hope.
