When February’s severe ice storm forced the Gordon Jewish Community Center to close for more than a week, the building fell quiet, but the spirit of the community did not.
The storm caused a building-wide power outage and significant damage when a pipe burst in the gym, flooding the downstairs court and impacting multiple areas of the facility, including the elevator. After days of restoration and repairs, the J officially reopened on February 4, welcoming members back into a warm and fully operational space.
The indoor pool, which sustained damage to its heater and pump during the storm, reopened on Wednesday, February 11, restoring one of the J’s most beloved gathering spaces.
Behind the scenes, staff worked tirelessly throughout the closure, coordinating vendors, communicating updates, and ensuring members stayed informed every step of the way. The focus was not only on restoring the building, but also on staying connected to the people who make the J a community.
In a particularly meaningful gesture, Carrie Mills, the J’s Older Adult Program Manager, personally called older members on her contact list to check in and make sure they were safe during the outage. Her outreach reflected what the J has always been about: care, connection, and showing up for one another.
While much of the facility is now fully operational, the downstairs gym remains under renovation. Rather than simply replacing damaged flooring, the J is installing a brand-new gym floor, turning a setback into an opportunity. A grand reopening celebration is planned once installation is complete.
As spring approaches, the J stands not just restored but renewed. The past month served as a reminder that while storms may disrupt schedules and spaces, the strength of a community lies in its people, and that foundation remains stronger than ever.
