Micah Community Creates Stunning Tallit and Graffiti Art in Inspiring Paper Midrash Weekend

Baruch ha-notein lanu ki’sharon litzor yofi v’leh-hehnot mimeinu. Praised be the One who makes us able to create and enjoy works of beauty.

Micah members of all ages had such fun creating art with the help of the dynamic Paper Midrash team, Rabbi Shawna and visual artist Isaac Brynjegard-Bialik.  After a whirlwind weekend exploring details and themes from the Exodus story, we are beyond proud of both our stunning “fingerprint mosaic” tallit as well as our “street art prophecy” graffiti wall that captures our teens’ take on Jewish values.  For the tallit’s atara, we selected the text from Micah 7:15 – “Show us wondrous deeds.”

Individual participants of the “Torah Study with Knives” session also took home their own midrashic papercut creations – each unique and personally revealing, much like the ongoing echo and unfolding of our shared Sinai experience.

We are delighted that future generations of students and families will be wrapped in or blessed underneath our new communal tallit. Likewise, powerful (and quite colorful!) prophetic messages will continue to inspire our teens from their newly-adorned youth lounge walls.

This hands-on embrace of hiddur mitzvah – beautifying the commandment – will remain a collective memory that our congregation will treasure for generations thanks to the talent and vision of Paper Midrash and our generous program donor - wondrous deeds, indeed.
