Israel at Heart: IAC National Summit Unites and Uplifts Amid Global Crisis

Against the backdrop of a global crisis facing Jews and supporters of Israel around the world, the Israeli-American Council (IAC) convened its 10th Annual National Summit around the unifying theme of Israel at heart in January. This year’s event was notably auspicious as it coincided with the completion of the IAC’s 18th year of unabashed pro-Israel community building and the strengthening of the bonds between the United States and the State of Israel.

What defines this annual event is its line-up of speakers, presenters, and facilitators who, in a collaborative spirit with the thousands of attendees, set the tone for three days of uplifting, meaningful, and critical engagement.

An important aspect of attending IAC is that it helps Jews and all supporters of Israel to get reoriented, to essentially regain their footing, especially during this time when things are feeling uncertain and, often, chaotic.

With the return of Master Sgt. Ran Gvili z”l, the final hostage, just two weeks later, hearing directly from his mother and sister was a powerful reminder of the duality of emotions the Jewish community holds. We continue to mourn and process October 7th and the tragedies that have unfolded since while looking for how to continue forward with joy and strength. As Tal Shuster of the IAC National Board said, “Strong communities don’t retreat, they rise together.”

During a breakout session, I heard from Gideon (Gidi) Grinstein, founder of the Reut Institute. When asked how Jews can build relationships with other communities, he thoughtfully emphasized the critical role JCRCs play in fostering strong and lasting community relations. His perspective underscored how intentional partnership-building and consistent dialogue are essential in today’s social climate. The discussion highlighted that relationship-building is not a one-time effort, but an ongoing commitment that requires both trust and shared responsibility.

Additionally, I had the opportunity to personally connect with former hostage Keith Segal and learn about his efforts to rebuild Kibbutz K’far Aza. He radiated a gentle spirit and spoke with sincerity on both his personal recovery and communal one. Hearing him describe the rebuilding of Kfar Azza with such determination underscored the resilience that continues to emerge even after profound, incomprehensible hardship. Our conversation served as a powerful reminder of the human stories behind the headlines and the importance of supporting long-term healing and rebuilding efforts.

The Summit highlighted not only the challenges before us, but the enduring connection to Israel that continues to anchor and inspire us. It was a reminder that progress often begins with conversation, presence, and collective resolve.
